The notion of creating a welded metal sculpture of a large male bust constructed entirely out of bicycle sprockets was percolating in my being. In 2015 I wanted to exhibit my sculpture in some California sculpture parks. I had discovered this one sculpture park and art gallery called Oakwilde Ranch and Sculpture in Valley Springs California that was hosting an annual sculpture show. This was the perfect opportunity and incentive to create A large metal sculpture using the bike gears.
One of the main inspirations for this subject mater was the large volumetric hollow chamber of the head. There is something rely satisfying about that shape that drew me to sculpt it. There is a certain delicacy and simplicity among the organized chaos of all the bicycle sprockets that sits well when viewing it.
The theme of the show was "Broken" and i struggled to find a title and a theme to match what I wanted to sculpt. I often set in to sculpt a sculpture first and after it's finished figure a title that seems to culminate with everything relevant to the resulting artwork. The head sculpture came first because I needed to express that form and see its completion. None of the titles suggesting the broken theme worked so i went with what came naturally. "Gears Of Thought" Was perfect. It suggested everything the piece is about on so many levels and in so many ways. I think the piece, the title, and its meaning are very universal to everyone. Its very relate-able and every time i look at it it starts the gears of my thought going as i ponder its juxtaposed polarity balancing complexity and simplicity.
